Fall Plans for the Empty Nester

family photo
Our family when their leaving home was far in our future!

This fall my husband and I are facing something entirely new: an empty nest. We have had our older daughter home with us for her first few years after high school. But timing is such that as our youngest prepares to leave for college our oldest is also preparing to move away from home. We are so proud of our daughters and excited for their new adventures. We remember what it felt like to set off for something new! But we are so sad for ourselves.

As I anticipate the end of summer and a quiet house, I’m trying to reimagine our lives. I’m a fixer at heart so to feel better I started thinking about how to handle this new phase. Since Autumn is when our changes happen I have been focusing on fall and, specifically, fall in northern Minnesota. Since Grand Rapids is tucked into the woods and surrounded by lakes I’ve decided to take the advice we give to our guests on their Minnesota fall getaways and plan some fall activities we can anticipate.

  1. When the trees begin to turn there is no place more beautiful than right here at home. We often advise our September guests to take a drive north on Highway 38 which is designated as the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway. With a resort to run and kids in high school sports we’ve only ever worked and watched volleyball in the fall. We’ve never really taken the time to just enjoy the Minnesota fall colors. We’ve appreciated them as we’ve driven to town and worked around the resort but we have never set off into the woods for the sole purpose of experiencing fall in Minnesota.  So, Plan 1 is to explore the our beautiful area during color watch season either by car or hiking trail!

  2. Grand Rapids is such a thriving community! There are many passionate community members who continue to create new reasons for people to spend Minnesota fall getaways in Grand Rapids, MN. There are four restaurants in particular that we love to recommend: Rapids Brewery, Unwined UpNorth, Klockow Brewery and the newest venue, Smoke on the Water. (It is so new the website isn’t quite functional yet so visit them on Facebook!) All of them are locally owned and operated, well-run and maybe a little unexpected for the out-of-town visitor.

Besides great dining options, there are also many events and attractions to fill your fall weekend in Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids Riverfest happens on September 9th this year. It is a an event that was born out of the former KAXE 91.7 Mississippi Riverfest, a grassroots celebration of the new station along the banks of the Mississippi River in Grand Rapids, MN. Fifteen years later Grand Rapids Riverfest is simply the best party in Grand Rapids. In addition to the music, the festival also incorporates local restaurants and breweries, giving you a literal taste of life in GR. This event is just one of many opportunities to explore and enjoy this fall. So Plan 2 is to get out of the house for some date nights and enjoy all of the great restaurants and area attractions in our area.

  3. Obviously, we are a lodging property so you know I’m going to talk about fall getaways! With newfound free time, a trip out of town is the most logical thing to plan for in my mind. We own and operate my favorite resort in Minnesota!! However, when we want to get away from our work, we book some time at one of the many other Minnesota resorts. We really enjoy spending time in Duluth or on the North Shore so we often head that way when we take a little break. Maybe this year we’ll go west instead. But for you, dear Blog Reader, you should come and stay with us! Wildwood Resort is the perfect destination for romantic Minnesota fall getaways or fall fishing trips. (There’s my shameless plug) But seriously, I think that we will need to book a weekend away for something to look forward to when the house feels a little empty.  Plan 3: book a fall weekend with my husband at a beautiful Minnesota resort.

  4. We’ve all watched family members and friends work through “empty nest syndrome.” The happy ones seem to have found stuff to do like volunteering and activities! One of the things I look forward to is rediscovering hobbies and interests that took a back seat to childrearing. Without kids in the house, I also plan to do more traveling in the fall. While we definitely plan to travel together I also look forward to finding time to spend with the girls who have gotten me to this point in life. Girlfriend weekends here we come! Bring on Plan 4 which will be exploring the world outside of our bubble and spending quality time with our people.

One of my sisters recommended the Facebook group Grown and Flown. I have nothing to do with them from a sponsorship perspective but I’ve found so many of the posts there helpful. Maybe you would, too. I think mostly we will try to focus on being healthy in mind, body and spirit and letting go gracefully through prayer and positive thinking. I hope those of you in our shoes can do the same.

In Support of Minnesota Winter Vacations

MN winter sunset over bass lake in Grand Rapids, MN

We are often asked by our summer guests what it’s like to stay in the winter.  The people asking the question are usually those who don’t love winter and, therefore, don’t have a lot of winter hobbies. And since they can watch the weather and see our temps well below 0°, they are understandably suspicious about the fun of Minnesota winter vacations.

Winter in northern Minnesota is spectacular! There is just no other word for when the landscape around you makes you feel as if you are in a snow globe.  Flocked trees and a blanket of snow can be just as beautiful as a perfect, sunny summer day! I love a clear night when the temperature is minus-a-lot-below-zero because of the crispness of the air and the clarity of the stars in the sky. Add a full moon to a clear night and it looks like God left on the yard light! The light from the moon reflecting off of the snowy ground easily creates enough light to navigate outside without a flashlight.  Like I said – its just spectacular!

There is a special kind of peace at dusk in Minnesota winter

Winter enthusiasts easily see the fun in a Minnesota winter vacation. “Good ice” is the thing they are most thankful for at Thanksgiving.  And a snowy winter is the best Christmas gift they can be given especially if there is a solid 8-12” before the heavy snow! For the last many years, the snowmobile trails in our area have not been ready for traffic by the New Year. But by mid-January they are usually rideable if we have had a December and an early January with good snowfall. The x-skiers and snowshoers can be among the happiest snow-lovers who stay with us since their winter hobbies require less snow than others. Our area has a multitude of fabulous and well-maintained x-ski trails and hundreds of miles of trails for snowshoeing. Both allow the silent sport enthusiast the chance to escape into the quiet of the winter forest.

women crafting in a cabin
Crafting weekends are a way for “non-winter” enthusiasts to enjoy Minnesota winter vacations

We also have many “non-winter” enthusiasts who do visit Wildwood in the winter. They often only go outside when unloading and loading their cars! Otherwise, they spend a few days in a cozy cabin with a view watching movies, quilting & crafting or just relaxing with family and friends. For those who do venture outside it is often to take in a performance at The Reif Center, take the kiddos to the Children’s Discovery Museum or to enjoy a great meal at a local restaurant. Others head to the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids, MN or the Hodgins-Berado Arena in Coleraine, MN to participate in youth hockey tournaments. We love introducing hockey families to weekend at a winter resort as an alternative to a traditional hotel stay.

Hands down the happiest winter visitor we see is the visitor who is ready to just enjoy time Up North.  Usually, these guests bring their ice fishing gear and snowmobiles hoping for good conditions. But they are equally content if their northern MN getaway ends up with more card playing than fish catching. The setting sun still produces beautiful sunsets even though it crosses low in the sky. Regardless of the season Wildwood is a place to take the time to rest and reconnect with family and friends.

Maybe this is the year you discover the joys of Minnesota winter vacations!

Top 10 Things To do on a Minnesota Summer Vacation

Every Minnesota family resort offers something different. At Wildwood Resort we pride ourselves on providing the perfect backdrop for your Minnesota family vacation! To us that means that our guests find clean accommodations, a safe environment, excellent customer service and a beautiful spot on Bass Lake! 2023 marks our 24th season as owners and over the course of those years we’ve developed some pretty strong opinions about what makes a perfect Minnesota summer vacation. Here’s our Top 10 Things to Do on a Minnesota Summer Vacation:

  1. Rest and relax – Life is so busy!! We rarely get the chance to have a guilt-free rest when we’re immersed in our real lives. The great thing about a MN family vacation is that rest and relaxation are inherent aspects of doing it right. Sleep late, nap on the beach and go to bed with a calm mind and an open heart.
  2. Evening Campfire – One of my favorite things about the summer season is the smell of campfire! Nearly all of our guests end their day beside a campfire. Some sing, most laugh and there are always marshmellows or S’mores.
  3. Fish – Some guests take the opportunity to spend most of their time fishing out on the lake . They are usually rewarded with at least one fish fry! Others take a more leisurly approach and do a lot of catch-and-release. The littles enjoy catching small fish off our our docks. No matter the approach it’s always great to spend time on the lake.
  4. Swim – Swimming is my favorite way to relax! There’s nothing more relaxing than spending a summer day on the water. We have a safe, sandy beach and Bass Lake is clean and clear. Swimming, tubing, waterskiing and sunbathing are always popular pasttimes.
  5. Play games or watch movies – In our normal life we rarely take time to play games or watch movies. Many of our guests enjoy cards, board games, yard games or puzzles as a way to spend time together. And the occasional rainy day provides a good excuse to snuggle up and watch a movie with the kids or grandkids!
  6. Enjoy Kids’ Activities – Twice weekly we have Activities Coordinators come in to entertain the kids. They do crafts and play games with the resort kiddos for a few hours each week of the summer. It’s fun for the kids and can offer a nice break to moms and dads!
  7. Potluck – On Monday nights in the summer we always have a resort potluck. It’s a great time to visit with us and other guests and the food is always awesome!
  8. Make new friends or renew connections – Whether you come to the resort with a group or you come with just your immediate family there are so many opportunities to connect with one another! It’s easier to renew and strengthen relationships outside of our normal environment. And on vacation it seems easier to make new acquaintences, too! Many of our longtime guests have made lifetime friendships with families they have met here at Wildwood. We believe that our families are the nicest people who come north. We’d love to welcome you, too!
  9. Take a bunch of sunset photos – Our west-facing spot on Bass Lake gives guests a front-row seat to amazing sunsets. You’ll go home with many, many pictures – each more beautiful than the one before.
  10. Enjoy the Grand Rapids, MN area – Grand Rapids is a great community! There are fabulous restaurants, shopping and area attractions. From golf to movies to natural wonders – you’ll find it all here.

We Can’t Wait for Winter!

snowmobiling at Wildwood Resort in Grand Rapids, Minnesota

We are anticipating the unveiling of our new website very soon! That means I’ve spent lots of time lately looking at content for the new site. Today I was nosing around in our old blog posts and it was so interesting to read about our life from 10 years ago! I realized a couple of things as I read them: 1) I’m very whiney in the fall after the summer resort season ends (sorry!) and 2) we usually have had at least a dusting of snow by the time MEA weekend comes around.

This year the unseasonably warm temperatures from summer have continued on through fall. We have appreciated the beautiful autumn days as we’ve worked outside to make the switch from summer mode to winter mode.  However, today I’m not thinking about fall – I’m thinking about Minnesota winter get-aways at Wildwood Resort.  In honor of the winter that we know will show up sooner or later I’ve compiled a list of the Top 5 Things to Do During a Winter Get-Away at Wildwood Resort! (in no particular order)

Plan a Girlfriend Get-Away with your favorite girls

Whether it’s your sisters, best friends or quilting circle winter is a great time to plan a winter stay at Wildwood! Over the years we’ve loved being a prime Minnesota winter destination for scrapbooking weekends, quilting retreats, holiday baking and generally frivolous and relaxing time with friends. Many of our girls’ groups come year after year to enjoy time with besties away from “real life”. We have warm, comfortable cabins perfect for any sized group and we’re happy to help with referrals for local activities and service providers.

Arrange a MN ice fishing weekend with friends or family

Ice fishing in Minnesota has a long and rich history. There’s nothing quite like fishing for big sunfish through the ice. When conditions allow it, Jay plows a road for our guests from the resort to the most popular area on our end of the lake for ice fishing. During years when conditions don’t allow him to do so our guests still have easy access via their ATV/UTV or snowmobile. With our unseasonable warm temps it will be interesting to see when Bass Lake ices over this year but rest assured it will happen so check availability today for your winter ice fishing weekend at Wildwood.

Book a weekend to explore our Minnesota snowmobile trails

We’ve traveled a fair amount to different snowmobile destinations in Minnesota and it is our sincere opinion that the snowmobile trails in Itasca County are among the most beautiful in the state! Thousands of miles of groomed trails running through heavy forests create the perfect backdrop for a winter weekend Up North. Our guests appreciate access to the county’s snowmobile trail system directly from their cabin and love returning to our warm and cozy accommodations at the end of a day’s ride.

Make plans to experience the outstanding cross-country ski trails in Itasca County

We are very fortunately to have an active Nordic ski club in our area that helps maintain the groomed x-ski trails around Grand Rapids, MN. We are centrally located in the midst of 19 beautiful x-ski trails that range in skill level from beginning to expert and some are lit for night skiing.

Take an opportunity to relax and recharge at Wildwood – a premier winter resort in Minnesota

Life is just too busy sometimes. And lots of us find ourselves just surviving Minnesota winters instead of THRIVING during them! This winter why not plan a trip Up North and embrace life below zero! Many of our guests use a winter weekend to reconnect with friends and family. Some do that with an active weekend full of winter activities and still others do that through a weekend spent by the fireplace playing cards or games. The HOW you spend a winter weekend at Wildwood Resort does not matter – it’s the WHO you make time for that does.

We invite you to our Minnesota winter resort to relax, recharge and reconnect! Our availability is up-to-date online but feel free to contact us with any questions.

Looking Forward

Tree removal has begun in preparation for the demo of the cabins.

This week we have started the demo of our older cabins. From past experience we knew that seeing the cabins with doors and windows torn out is painful. However, past experience still doesn’t lessen the shock of seeing the cabins torn up. We’ve emptied Cabins 2, 3 & 4 and started the “gutting” of Cabin 1. We’ve packed up and stored what we’ll reuse and we are in the process of selling or donating the rest.

My cousin and her family came to help us with the demo week. They even took vacation time to do it!

Right now the building are scheduled to be razed the week of October 7th. I included some pictures of the demo but just a word or warning:  some photos may be distrubing to long-time Wildwood guests. :'( You can see more photos of our project as it progresses on the Wildwood Resort Facebook page. (You don’t need a Facebook account to see the photos on our page!)

mn fishing
Kevin caught this big nothern pike over Labor Day weekend!

We’ve had a really nice September with warm temps and lots of guests to enjoy the weather. Fishing has been really good which is a bit of a relief after the wierd summer. The late spring seemed to throw everything off this year…from the vegetation to the spawn so some weeks were ok and others were not so hot. Most guests this fall, however, have gotten into the fish that’s good!

Minnesota fall color tours
The foliage is just beginning to turn. The sunset last night really lit up the fall colors!

The fall colors are just beginning to show themselves so the season of fall color tours is just starting. Around us I’d say we aren’t quite to 25% yet but some of the trees on our property are absolutely gorgeous already. Check here for updated information from the DNR about fall colors in Minnesota!

That’s it for now.  Hope you are having a great week!

P.S. We’ll be debuting our new website SOON!  Stay tuned….

Summer Fun at Wildwood Resort

family vacations
Today was a perfect day for playing in the lake!

Today was such a beautiful day! We spent the day on the lake with family and enjoyed every minute of it. Boat problems kept us from tubing but we still took the pontoon out and swam in the clean, clear water of Bass Lake.

minnesota walleye fishing
It was a great night of fishing with Grandpa!

Fishing has been a little slow but most of our guests are finding enough fish to put in the fryer. We even had one generous group share their fresh catch at potluck last night! With temps hovering around 90 today I’m sure the bite will be a little better as the sun starts to go down.

One more thing before I close a very SHORT blog this week….we had a cancellation for the week of August 3rd to August 10th in White Pine Lodge. Looking for Summer Fun? Please call or email if you think you might be interested in booking our opening!
